The Canticle of the Sun by St Francis

Extract

Be praised, O God, along with all your creatures,

Especially my Reverend Brother Sun,

Who is the daylight; by him you enlighten us.

Beautiful is he, with immense splendour radiant;

He is like unto you, Most High.

Be praised, my Lord, for Sister Moon and the stars;

Made by you in the heavens, they are fair, precious, bright.

Be praised, my Lord, for Brother Wind,

For the sky, clouded and serene, for all weathers

By which you sustain your creatures.

Be praised, my Lord, for Sister Water,

So helpful, humble, precious and chaste.

Praised be my Lord for Brother Fire;

You light up the night with him,

Fair is he, and playful, mighty and strong.

Praised be my Lord for Sister Earth, our Mother;

She nourishes us and rules us

And brings forth so many fruits, coloured flowers and herbs.

Let us all praise and bless the Lord and give him thanks,

And with great humility serve him.
